Hyampom Graduation
I'm not sure how many years I taught in Hyampom, California. It was either 2 or 3 years. Not even sure what years they were . . . This is dated 1964. I'm sure I was in charge of graduation, but not positive. I am sure that I was in charge of the "choir" which sang some songs on the program. This program was run of on an old ditto machine which gives you an idea how long I have been in the educating business. Jeez . . . I wanted to add here that you see Bruce Owens was the principal of the school. Bruce was a truly good man. As I recall he was missing a thumb. He may not come up again in these proceedings so I wanted to mention him here. We were good friends and really good drinking buddies. One night we went into the town of Hayfork, 24 miles back up the dirt road. On the way home from a night of boozing and carousing, we ran into a herd of cattle on the road. Well, we flipped a coin and I was designated to get on the roof of the car while Bruce drove. It was then my job to hollar at the cows something like, "Get along little doggies, get along, get along" and other appropriate outbursts. Probably not as funny as it was then, but pretty funny when I think about it. Of course, I can now look at it from the vantage point of 21 years of sobriety.
