Tribute to Al

This was a "newspaper" published by the Barq's Bottling Company.  Al was sort of in on the beginning of Barq's.  You see the picture of Al, Jeanne's father, on the front.  They made Al "Soldier of the Month."  Al was still in the service at the time.  There is a whole biography of Al on the inside.  There are things I did not know about Al.  Apparently when they first opened a plant in Cincinnati, it was in a not so proper area in town and they almost had to arm themselves to survive.  In an article entitled "5th Anniversary of Cincinnati Barq Bottling Company," there is a story about Al.  "Then there was the night that Al Badanes unloaded his 38 at a shadow . . . Fortunately it was a shadow."  Interesting times for Al to say the least.  I recommend this item to the family.

My father, Al, and Tuttle started Barq's in Cincinnati, I believe. It was root beer, orange, cream soda, and grape. Mr. Barq lived in Biloxi, Mississippi. At one point, pre Alan and Betsy we vacationed there. Now in 2014 Coke has bought the formula for Barq root beer. I think lives were threatened over that formula. Speaking of Coke, our father, Al, developed a formula for cherry cola and vanilla cola , which he took to Coke and they laughed at him. My dad swore when Coke came out with their cherry and vanilla colas that it was his original recipe!!!

I remember when I was a boy, growing up in Salinas, and always seeing these old Barq's soft drink containers all over the house. Some were RC cola bottles that had been twisted and elongated, others were root beer cans from the fifties or sixties. Though I never got to visit grandpa's franchise, or see him at his office, I always imagined these big machines and vats and all these workers, putting in the time to make the items that found there way to my living room and kitchen, decades after their contents had been enjoyed and emptied by customers.
