This is a birthday card from my Aunt Maude to someone. You can see the date. The little note at the bottom was inside the card. Aunt Maude was my Grandma's sister. This was the Grandma we called "Nana." Aunt Maude was her sister. Actually, I think all us cousins like Aunt Maude better than we did Nana. Aunt Maude wore thick glasses which made her eyes very large. She was a very large woman and rather imposing. I think she was not very good looking. She never married. She taught school in Reedley and lived all her life with Nana after Nana lost her husband. One year I was going to General Grant Junior High School in Reedley. I would go to Nana's house for lunch. Aunt Maude would make me some lunch. I loved those times with her. She lived close enough to the school for me to walk to her house. I'm not sure what year the Supreme Court's decision about integrated schools came down, but I heard about it. I ran home and told Aunt Maude, "I guess we showed those Southerners." I was sitting down. Aunt maude leaved over me in that chair with her huge eyes larger than normal because of her anger. In angry tones and words she said, "I am a Southerner!" I wish I could say it for you so you could hear. It absolutely terrified me. I don't think we spoke of it again. Just as well I think. Aunt Maude loved to play a card game called "Old Maid." We loved playing Old Maid with Aunt Maude. I think this card was probably to Nana or my Mother.
